Respond to emergencies as a community

By Dustin Findley

Strategic Actions For Emergencies (SAFE) is the Milpitas equivalent of the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program.

The next class will consist of eight sessions, each Thursday, January 21 through March 4.

The class will inform participants of what should be in an emergency kit so they and their families can survive for 72 hours after an emergency or disaster strikes.

Participants will learn many things including how to use emergency tools and equipment; work in emergency response teams within your community; help save lives and property and safely manage a disaster in the immediate vicinity.

Members of SAFE will have free access to continuing education, like CPR, hazardous materials, electronic defibrillation, Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service (RACES), and more.

Membership includes being able to register as a Disaster Service Worker (DSW). In the event of an emergency, DSWs are covered by worker's compensation if injured while responding to an emergency.

"We want to make sure, if we can, that our disaster service workers are well-fed, well-rested and well-cared for because they're the ones that help us rescue the people who were less prepared," said Sean Simonson, Emergency Services Coordinator.

Simonson will beta test teaching the SAFE course himself with the arson investigator and other City employees.

The class will prepare participants to prepare themselves for an emergency and help them to assist their communities, neighbors, friends and family.

"The more people that can work together in a disaster, the faster we can rebuild the community and the sooner people can move back into their homes and we can restore a sense of normality," said Simonson.
