Last month, the U-10 Newark Power House became the first Newark girls soccer team, of any age, to win the Crossroads Invitational Soccer Tournament. It was the culmination of a fantastic season in which Power House went undefeated and won first place in the season-ending Director's Cup.
At the first practice in August, Coach Ron Nelson told his girls that his goal was to be the first Newark girls team to win Crossroads. Throughout the successful season he focused on teaching the girls teamwork and building a strong team top to bottom.
With every regular season win the girls' confidence grew and when they finished the regular season undefeated they were ready for the challenge of Crossroads.
Sweeping the opening round with victories over Dublin (2-0), San Ramon (4-0) and Livermore (1-0), they met Fremont in the finals. Regular time ended with the score 0-0; with no scores in overtime the decision went to penalty kicks.
Power House out shot Fremont 4-2 in penalty kicks to secure NCS Girls first Crossroads victory and complete the goal they had set at the beginning of the year.
Coach Ron and his wife Cecilia were recognized with others by Assembly Majority Leader Alberto Torrico's with a certificate of recognition, honoring local heroes at Irvington High School on Thursday, Dec. 10. Power House was on hand to accept the honor.
