Chabot College receives federal grant for textbook rental program
Submitted By Patricia Russell
Chabot College has received a $299,075 grant from the US Department of Education's Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education for use as seed money to launch a comprehensive textbook rental program across 29 courses, covering at least 20 percent of the enrollment in each course.
The textbook rental program will satisfy the diverse needs of Chabot students, including nursing students, for courses that focus on basic skills, career-technical education or prepare students for transfer. The rental program will reduce the cost of textbooks by 60-70 percent and will cover 23-67 percent of the total enrollment for the targeted courses (67 percent of total nursing student enrollment).
The Chabot textbook rental program is designed to be fully sustainable and allow for growth. Chabot has also committed to using the majority of the rental income for book purchases in subsequent years. The Chabot College Foundation has already committed $10,000 to the program for Fall 2009.
The textbook rental program, just one strategy among many textbook-affordability strategies, is integral to improving student access and success at Chabot College.
