Changes to occupancy permit and business license application

By Dustin Findley

The flat fee of $413, payable by all new businesses for a certificate of occupancy, regardless of the business' size, has been waived for small businesses occupying executive offices of 150 square feet or less.

Previously, online absence of the City's fee schedules created some uncertainty for people who needed information but were not ready to contact the city as part of their due diligence in deciding where to locate their business. The fee schedule for business license applications is now on the City's website.

Besides the application form for a business license, there used to be six or seven forms in the "Starting a New Business" section of the city's website.

"This could overwhelm someone still trying to decide whether or not to start a business," explained Economic Development Commissioner Michelle Yu to Council.

Although there are now fewer forms, the city's rigorous review process will remain in force. The business application form, which has been changed to become more user-friendly, will soon be available online.

Certain forms, such as the pollution prevention form, standard industrial classification, sanitary sewer waste and information questionnaires will still be required once someone has decided to locate a business in Milpitas and applies for a business license.
