By Jeff Weisinger
Despite losing their two exhibition games earlier this month the Cal State East Bay men's basketball team tipped-off their season on the right foot, defeating San Diego Christian 67-48 at home on Saturday, Nov. 21.
The Pioneers shot 51 percent on the night, with Will Freedman and Adam Green each scoring 12 points. Melvin Williams added 10 points in the winning cause.
Leading by 10, 33-23, at the half, the Pioneers took as much as a 22 point lead in the second before settling with their 19-point victory.
Looking ahead, the Pioneers hope to start the season 3-0 when they travel to Belmont to play in the Notre Dame de Namur Classic on November 27 and 28. They'll play NDNM in the opening-night headliner at 7 p.m. before battling Western Oregon at 5 p.m. in the second day of action.
Women's Basketball: Western Washington-88, East Bay-55
A 0-3 start, including both exhibition games in early November, was not what the Lady Pioneers wanted, however after Friday night's, Nov. 20, opener against Western Washington, that's where they find themselves at after losing their home opener to the Vikings.
Claudia Nelson led the Lady Pioneers with 18 points but her performance was overshadowed by the Vikings' Amanda Dunbar, who scored 28.
Western Washington took an early 14-4 lead, and never looked back, taking a 49-33 lead at halftime, leading by as much as 30 in the second half.
The Lady Pioneers will scrimmage Dominican College on November 28 in San Rafael before starting a three-game road trip at Cal Poly Pomona on December 4.
