NCS tennis recap
By David J. Nicolas
In the Northern California team tennis tournament, Mission San Jose High School (seeded no. 2 by virtue of their NCS team championship) was eliminated in the semifinals by no.-three seed, and eventual champion, Monta Vista High School, 6-1.
Mission had defeated Lowell High School in the quarterfinals, 4-2, before being ousted from the tournament. Monta Vista beat Granite Bay High School (4-1 in the quarters) and no.-1 seed Saratoga High School (4-3 in the finals) to claim the title.
Number-two seed Laura Posylkin of San Marin High School defeated Amador Valley High School's Brooke Irish, 6-3 and 6-1 to win the North Coast Section girls tennis singles championship on Wednesday, Nov. 18.
Posylkin improved from 2008's fourth-place NCS finish. As the champion of the Marin County Athlete League this season, Posylkin remains undefeated in league for the past two seasons with a 45-0 record.
Mission San Jose High School's Natsuko Takayanagi and Stephanie Quan needed three sets (6-2, 5-7, 6-2) to take home the doubles championship against Shannon Hung and Kellie Taylor of California High School.
This is the first time since 1986 that a Mission San Jose doubles team has won the doubles championship. |
