For the past four years, Girl Scout troop 31315 from Newark has been volunteering for LOV (League of Volunteers). Comprised of ten-year-old fifth graders, this troop has been making 'fall-themed' centerpieces for LOV's annual Thanksgiving dinner. LOV's annual Thanksgiving dinner is open to all including those who would spend the day alone or without resources for a meal.
Mary Forrest has been assisting the girls since they were in Kindergarten and holds the troop meetings at her home in Newark. "We've been told," says Forrest, "that LOV really enjoys the centerpieces the girls make and they save them to use for other occasions."
This year the Girl Scout troop decided on pumpkin topiary centerpieces for the Thanksgiving Day dinner. But somehow that just wasn't enough for Forrest, especially when she read that LOV, which had been expecting more food donations, didn't have enough at this point."
"I thought if I brought up the situation to the girls, they would decide to do something about it," says Forrest. "LOV expects about 5,000 people for Thanksgiving dinner and at the time I was there, I saw only 5 turkeys in their freezer," she explained to the troop.
The girls had been saving their money, earned by selling Girl Scout cookies and canned nuts, to use for a future trip to Disneyland. Their savings totaled only $600, but they immediately decided to use $200 to buy the needed turkeys for LOV.
Forrest made arrangements to shop at a Newark Safeway store, with her Girl Scout troop, to purchase the turkeys. Once there, the girls were excited to pick up the frozen birds and each took turns putting them into carts and taking them to the registers. The troop paid full price for 10 turkeys, amounting to over $160.
"The following morning, LOV was really pleased when I dropped off the turkeys to them," says Forrest. "The girls truly understand the concept of giving back to the community."
