Theatre Preview: "The Hobbit"

By Deborah Carpenter

"I am looking for someone to share in an adventure..."

Between the dawn of Faerie and the Dominion of Men, this unlikely hero's journey is full of magic and mystery! Travel there and back again with Bilbo Baggins of the Shire and Gandalf the Grey in this epic adventure to reclaim a stolen treasure from a fearsome Dragon, Smaug!

Along the way are adventures with Trolls and Elves, a battle with Goblins and an infamous game of "Riddles in the Dark" with a creature named Gollum, from whom Bilbo acquires a most peculiar ring. This prelude to Tolkien's celebrated "Lord of the Rings" trilogy is a literary classic for all ages, full of extraordinary characters created for the stage in a theatrical quest that takes audiences from the gentle hills of the Shire to the Shadows of the Lonely Mountain.

"The Hobbit" ensemble cast is led by Allison D'Ambrosio as a reluctant and fearful Bilbo Baggins and Nicole Mitchell as a commanding and magical Gandalf the Grey. The Dwarves are lead heroically by Thorin played by Brian Barrientz II; Bombur played by Natalie Edelman adds some hungry humor. Humorous antics continue with Kili (Rachel Ho) and Fili (Kristina Haran) along with Bofur (Jennifer Windsor); Dori (Tierney Holloway), Nori, (Jyanea Fae Casiano), Oin, (Kaeomakana Tiwanak) and Gloin, (Chris Wilson). A special Grocery Boy played by Ares Birbeck-Fazio delivers food soon devoured by the Dwarves.

Exciting from beginning to end, spectacular set design, lighting, and makeup transforms the stage as The Hobbit takes the audience on an exceptional quest to another world of long ago and far away. Artistic Director Mrs. Linda Jackson-Whitmore, head of the Irvington Conservatory Theatre, has chosen another wonderful story to entertain the young and young at heart.
