Saturday night's football game between Newark Memorial High School and Mission San Jose High School was a game of opposites.
After losses to tough James Logan and Washington High School teams, momentum tipped toward the Cougars (4-2-0 Mission Valley Athletic League, 6-4-0). Their 24-7 victory on November 14 at Tak Fudenna Stadium was their third in a row.
This outcome was the 10th loss of the season for the Warriors who went 0-6-0 in the MVAL and 0-10-0 overall. Opponents held Mission San Jose scoreless six times this season.
The Cougars allowed the Warriors only one touchdown. The Warriors' quarterback was 6-15 in passes with four interceptions and one sack.
Three separate Cougars found the end zone for Newark.
The Cougars struck first with one play on its own 37-yard line when sophomore quarterback Chris Flexen found an open Kendall Andrews. Andrews avoided two tackles and earned the Cougars six points. Newark led 7-0 after the extra point with 11:38 left in the second quarter.
Later in the same quarter, the Warriors began their drive on the Cougars' 21-yard line after a bad punt. Mission San Jose ran for a touchdown and kicked for an extra point to tie the score at 7-7 before the end of the quarter.
A blocked Warrior field goal attempt in the third quarter allowed the Cougars to extend their lead. Sean Guterres, a senior, finished the drive with five carries and a touchdown. After the successful PAT, Memorial was up by a touchdown with 11:15 left in the third.
The Cougars later capped their victory with an Anthony Benavente field goal in the fourth quarter. |
