By Jeff Weisinger
After defeating Humboldt State 3-1 on Friday, Nov. 13, giving them back-to-back wins for the first time since September 25 and 26, the Cal State East Bay volleyball team could not end the season on a winning note, as they fell to Sonoma State 3-1 (24-26, 20-25, 25-19, 18-25) on Saturday, Nov. 14.
Although it was tough to end the season with a loss, the Lady Pioneers do end the season on somewhat of a positive note, winning two of their last three matches, despite losing five-consecutive matches prior to those last three.
East Bay was a point shy of taking the first set from Sonoma as they led 24-19, sparked by a key kill by Katie Gellerman, however Sonoma fought back, scoring seven unanswered points to take the set 26-24.
The Lady Pioneers would drop the second set 20-25, however would fight back in the third set to keep the match alive. East Bay took a 20-14 lead in the third set which was led by Briana Bryant and Sukhjit Athwal who accounted for two of East Bay's final five points, including the kill that ended the set and pushed the match to a fourth set.
In the fourth set, Sonoma State took a 9-1 lead and never looked back, winning the last set 25-18.
Kayla Woods recorded nine kills off the bench and Roxanne Neely had six kills on the night, including 31 assists and nine digs.
