Girls volleyball rundown

Mission San Jose and Fremont Christian high schools won their conference playoffs last week to advance to the North Coast Section playoffs. MSJ captured the Mission Valley Athletic League (MVAL) crown while FC was victorious in the Bay Counties League (BCL).

As the MVAL regular season winners, Mission hosted the playoffs on Tuesday and Thursday, November 3 and 5. Since MSJ was the number-one seed, they would have had to been beaten twice in order to be eliminated.

On Tuesday, Mission defeated number-four seed James Logan High School, 3-0, while number three Irvington High School ousted number two Washington High School in straight sets, 26-24, 25-22 and 25-17.

Leading Coach Kim Martin's Irvington Vikings were Katie Lopez, 20 kills, 5 digs, 3 blocks; Morgan Aspelund, 7 kills, 4 aces, 13 digs; Danielle Carothers, 15 assists, 10 digs; and Ali Fremont, 14 assists, 5 aces, 5 digs. For the Huskies of Coaches Ashley Eyre and Nicole Rodamer, leading the way were Cody Bates, 15 digs; Caitlin Jorgens, 7 kills, 3 blocks; and Konami Yokoyama, 16 kills, 5 aces.

Thursday saw Coach Donny Hui's Warriors defeat the Vikings, 3-1, for the MVAL crown. Leaders for Irvington were Lopez, 22 kills, 17 digs, 3 aces, 3 blocks; Aspelund, 5 kills, 2 blocks, 15 digs; and Ashley Hubacek, 7 kills, 4 digs. Game scores and MSJ stats were not available.

Also on Tuesday, Nov. 3, in Hayward Area Athletic League (HAAL) playoff action at Castro Valley High, Castro Valley High School defeated Mt. Eden High School, 3-0, and Moreau Catholic High School downed Hayward High School, 3-0.

Game scores for MC-Hayward were 25-5, 25-14 and 25-3. Coach Lyndsey Mietz's Mariner stat leaders were Laura Burckhardt, 15 assists, 4 digs; Katrina Torres, 7 kills, 4 aces, 2 blocks; Megan Scully, 5 kills, 3 aces; and Jade Santos, 7 aces, 4 digs.

Thursday, Nov. 5, saw the Mariners lose their semifinals match-up to Castro Valley, 3-0. Scores of the games were 25-15, 25-18 and 25-23. Leading MC were Burckhardt, 23 assists, 17 digs, 2 kills; Scully, 9 kills, 3 digs; and Rina Taufaasau-Tui, 5 kills, 3 blocks, 2 assists.

In the BCL playoffs on November 3, Fremont Christian defeated Chinese Christian High School, 3-0, while Contra Costa Christian High School beat California School for the Deaf-Fremont, 3-0 in semifinals action. In the BCL Championship on November 5 number-two Fremont Christian upset CCC, 3-0, to guarantee a spot in the NCS.

NCS playoffs will have first-round play on Wednesday, Nov. 11, and round two on Saturday, Nov. 14. During the following week's Wednesday and Saturday, the semifinals and finals will be played. There will be six divisions based on enrollment with DI being the largest schools and DVI the smallest.

The lineup for Division I in the opening week is as follows:

On Wednesday: #13 Berkeley High School @ #4 Mission San Jose with the winner playing the winner of #12 San Leandro High School and #5 Deer Valley High School on Saturday; Wednesday, #10 Liberty High School @ # 7 Irvington with the winner at #2 Granada High School on Saturday; and #11 James Logan @ #6 Washington with the winner at #3 Foothill High School on Saturday.

In Division III on Wednesday, #10 Acalanes High School will be at #7 Moreau Catholic with the winner at #2 Analy High School on Saturday.

In Division V on Wednesday, #7 College Prep High School travels to #10 Fremont Christian with the winner at #2 Marin Academy on Saturday.
