Senior Advisory Commission

At the October 27 meeting commissioners reviewed upcoming events and informally discussed the importance of volunteering.

Milpitas will celebrate Veterans Day on November 11, 9 a.m. in the City Hall amphitheater flag area.

The annual Tree Lighting event will take place on November 30 this year to avoid conflict with the City Council meeting scheduled for December 1.

On the agenda for this meeting was a staff request for volunteers to help with upcoming Bingo games. This item led to an informal discussion.

Most senior centers run on a high number of volunteers. There is a higher number of volunteers than there are staff in the majority of senior centers in the Bay Area. Milpitas is trying to catch up by encouraging seniors to volunteer.

"It's a great idea that seniors volunteer at their center. It instills a sense or pride. It instills a sense of ownership. They feel involved. They feel connected to the center" said Renee Lorentzen, Senior Center Supervisor.

Not only is it important for seniors to volunteer at the senior center, but also as members of the Senior Advisory Commission.

"Every person on this commission is charged to volunteer, to sit in representation of the seniors, not just at the Senior Center, but Milpitas as a whole. Part of that is to participate at the center, volunteer, and fundraise" said Lorentzen.

Commissioners need to volunteer to be in touch with "the people, the programs, and this community that you are, have agreed to and have volunteered to represent."

Helping out as much as possible, either through volunteering, donating, or fundraising, is what builds a community.

"Every commission is a working commission" said Lorentzen.

There is more to being a part of a commission than just sitting in a meeting, there is work outside of the meeting.

The item of volunteering will be agendized for the next meeting so senior advisory commissioners can develop ideas.

Approved the purchase of wireless microphone headset for bingo master of ceremonies and available for others to present hands free.

Vice-Mayor McHugh reported to the Senior Advisory Commission that Wal-Mart, at McCarthy Ranch in Milpitas, is proposing that they add 18,000 square feet. The store would become a "Super Wal-Mart" by including groceries.

There is concern that if Wal-Mart expands it is going to have an impact on all the grocery stores in Milpitas.

The next Senior Advisory Commission meeting will be on January 26, 2010.
