San Lorenzo wins battle of fumbles

By Biff Jones

On Friday, Oct. 30, Mt. Eden High School of Hayward traveled to San Lorenzo High School to take on the Rebels in Hayward Area Athletic League (HAAL) football action. San Lorenzo was able to take advantage of Monarchs turnovers, which propelled HAAL's second-place Rebels over the seventh-place Monarchs, 19-12.

SLR received the opening kick-off and started on its own 23 yard line. After methodically moving down the field using up almost half of the first quarter, the Rebels fumbled the down ball and it was recovered by Mt. Eden junior lineman Robert Mitchell on the Monarchs 30.

First play from scrimmage for the Monarchs saw senior quarterback Joe Latu run for 48 yards down to the Rebels 22. However, on the next play Mt. Eden fumbled the ball right back to San Lorenzo where they recovered on their own 23.

First score of the game came with 7:39 to go in the second quarter on a three-yard Rebels touchdown pass for a 6-0 lead as the PAT was missed wide right.

During the first possession for the Monarchs in the second quarter, Latu hit senior wide receiver Antoine Williams with a 16-yard pass play but ME was unable to convert anymore first downs on the drive and turned the ball over on downs on its own 46 yard line.

On the ensuing drive, SLR converted passes of 26 and 18 yards before again fumbling it back to ME who took over with about 2:50 to go in the first half.

Before the half, the Monarchs would finally get on the score board behind the arm of Latu. On the scoring drive, Latu connected on passes of 10 yards to senior wide receiver, Chris Salinas; 14 yards to Williams; 35 yards to Salinas; and a 22-yard TD to Salinas with 0:37 to play in the second quarter. After a blocked PAT, the game was tied at 6-6.

On the first play from scrimmage in the second half, Mt. Eden fumbled to SLR only to have the Rebels fumble it back to the Monarchs on their first play.

After a ME punt SLR went on a four-minute scoring drive to take a 13-6 lead with 4:53 to go in the third.

Fourth quarter would see SLR go on a 66-yard scoring drive using up about six minutes of play. A one yard QB sneak would put the Rebels up 19-6 (point after again missed) with 7:08 to play.

A kickoff return would put ME back on offense on its 37. Latu would again go to the air and hit Williams with passes of eight and 12 yards before connecting with senior wide receiver Christian Leano with 28- and nine-yard pass completions.

After a four yard loss, Latu again found Williams for an eight-yard TD pass. Try for two was no good and the score of 19-12 would be the final.

"Turnovers and penalties killed us," said Mt. Eden Coach George Mitsopoulos, "The kids try hard and that's all we can ask"

Next up for the Monarchs is a home game against in-city rival Hayward High School on Friday, Nov. 6, at 2:45 p.m. Mt. Eden's HAAL record is 1-4 (1-7 overall) and they remain in seventh place. Hayward is 4-1 in the HAAL (6-2 overall) and is tied for second with San Lorenzo behind first place San Leandro High School (5-0, 6-2 overall).
