On Tuesday, Oct. 27, Lightning Bolts of the FC Fremont Under-14 Girls House Soccer League dropped their regular-season finale, 1-0, to Ice Breakers.
Only goal came in the final 90 seconds on a breakaway. Cheyenne Gilman, normally a defender, played well in her first game at forward. Meanwhile Nicole Furukawa played well while matched up against Ice Breakers' top offensive player.
Halloween Saturday saw Lightning Bolts play perhaps their best game of the season, extending first place and undefeated Stompers to penalty kicks before losing in the girls U-14 playoff championship game. It was the fourth time this season the two teams had met.
This time, they battled on even terms, 0-0, through regulation time and two five-minute overtime periods before penalty kicks were employed. Stompers outscored Lightning Bolts 3-2 in the shootout. Gilman and Elena Strom converted their PKs for the Bolts.
Underdog Lightning Bolts had the best scoring chance in the two overtimes when Aaryonna Lopez fired a shot that just missed. In the first half, Stompers appeared to score a goal, but they were ruled offside on the play. After that, Lightning had chances by Amy de Landa, Gilman and Jenna Wondka, but could not convert.
Strom had a great game, especially in the first half, winning numerous free balls and controlling the game from her midfield position. Goalie Samantha Stephens came up with two huge saves in the second half to keep the game scoreless. Zoe Rayburn, Kailey Richardson and Synclaire Hamilton had standout games on defense while Alexia Dentoni played well at midfield.
Lightning Bolts next play in the Director's Cup later this month.
