Fremont Flowers to relocate

The statement, "Everything old is new again" is especially relevant to Dirk Lorenz and Fremont Flowers these days. Over five years ago, a move to the former Cloverdale Creamery in Centerville was made in anticipation of the then-proposed Charter Development project at the Centerville Unified Site across the street. Due to a variety of factors, the Unified Site remains vacant and economic conditions may dictate that it remain so for the foreseeable future. In the meantime, Fremont Flowers has expanded its "family" to include East Bay Flower Market, a wholesale distributor and the presence of Marlowes Flowers.

An offer "too good to pass up" motivated this venerable business to relocate again on November 30, 2009, this time back to its previous location. Requirements of a potential remodel at the prior location prompted the landlord to ask Dirk if there was anything he wanted to salvage from that space - fixtures, cabinetry, etc. A visit to his old quarters proved enlightening and prompted Dirk to reevaluate his situation. "I polled friends and customers asking 'What building did you like better?' and found most preferred our previous location." Although those polled preferred the design and "fit" of the previous location, a great deal of sentiment was expressed for the Creamery and strong opinions voiced to retain the character and existence of the historic building and, if possible, use as an ice cream parlor.

Lorenz, mindful of the value of continuing the creamery, is currently considering options with the Bauhofer family to help preserve its character. He feels that Centerville can become a vital retail center anchored by the revival of the Center Theater, a revived Cloverdale Creamery, expansion at Dale Hardware and Fremont Flowers. He is convinced that the Unified Site and new businesses will respond to the combined energy of these anchors.

To introduce the business community to the relocation of Fremont Flowers, a Chamber of Commerce "mixer" will be held at the "new" location of Fremont Flowers on November 4. Fremont Flowers will continue to operate from the Cloverdale Creamery location until its move November 30.
