Make a Difference Day

By Simon Wong

City residents will gather as a community on October 24, national Make a Difference Day, in Cardoza Park and share information and resources about health, wealth, community collaboration and emergency and disaster preparedness.

Milpitas Executive Lions Club will offer free blood pressure tests and blood sugar testing. Old eyeglasses can be donated. Milpitas Police Department will organize fingerprinting for children. Milpitas Fire Department will inform the public of the need for personal emergency preparation.

Residents are encouraged to bring non-perishable food, good clothes and shoes for all ages to donate to local food pantries and outreach centers. Blankets, jackets, sleeping bags and bedding for the winter will also be received. Milpitas Food Pantry/Second Harvest and Jubilee Outreach Center need these items. Many other resources and much more information are on offer.

"Milpitas is a very special place because the spirit of caring, giving and sharing is so evident. We can no longer ignore or turn a blind eye on the many challenges we all face: economic/financial disaster, health care crisis... and people who lose hope or do not realize their potential," said Leah O. Facun, Make a Difference Day Volunteer Coordinator.

"We urgently need to do something to maintain the total wellness of each individual and the families in our communities. We ask citizens to join our community, collaborative effort to raise awareness of our needs and share relevant information and resources for remedies and solutions. Please join us to help us reach our neighbors and friends," she concluded.

To participate or volunteer, contact Leah O. Facun on (408) 272-0302 or by email at
