Annual community altar for Day of the Dead
Submitted By Betty DeForest
Westminster Hills Presbyterian Church will begin its annual celebration of life and love, Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) following the morning service on October 25.
Each year the congregation constructs a community altar to celebrate and remember the lives of family and friends who have died. In a tradition borrowed from Hispanic culture, we come together with music, stories, and good food to commemorate the lives of those who are now with us only in spirit.
The week -long celebration is open to all residents of the community. Those who are far from home and family are particularly welcome to join in the festivities.
The church will open in the evening on October 27 and October 28 for anyone who wishes to add mementos and pictures to the altar. The week will conclude on November 3 as folk gather at 6.30 p.m. to share a pot luck supper and brief service. Participants are encouraged to bring a favorite food of someone who has passed. Everyone is welcome.
