Santa Clara County receives global recognition
Submitted By Wahila Wilkie
San Jose and Santa Clara County have been honored as the Inaugural City and County in the global partner city network of the Parliament of the World's Religions, due to the region's extensive work in bringing the discussion around nonviolence and inter-religious organizations' roles in this effort to the forefront in the community. "San Jose/Santa Clara County is uniquely qualified to receive this impressive recognition given how the demographics of our valley have been shaped by rapid expansion in the technology industry and exponential growth in cultural and religious diversity," said Reverend Ellen O'Brian, Spiritual Director for the Center for Spiritual Enlightenment and convener of the Silicon Valley Partner City Group, adding, "the changes in our community's make-up have prompted a movement of committed individuals from the faith, nonprofit, education, and government sectors to engage residents in how we can advance positive social interaction."
A delegation from Santa Clara County will travel to Melbourne, Australia to receive the award at the World Parliament in December 2009. Local acknowledgement of San Jose/Santa Clara County's Partner City status will occur at Inter-religious Leaders Reception sponsored by Center for Spiritual Enlightenment and County Supervisor Dave Cortese on November 12, 2009.
