Lady Huskies fall to Warriors
Submitted By Reese Spondon
Thursday, Oct. 8, at Washington High School was Senior Night for the Lady Huskies, but they had bigger things on their minds. The Husky water polo team (undefeated going into the night's contest) was up against the only other undefeated team in the Mission Valley Athletic League (MVAL), the Mission San Jose Warriors.
This was billed as the biggest match up of the year and the action seen did not disappoint the capacity crowd. In the end, the road Warriors were able to pull out the two-goal victory, 7-5.
The Huskies took the lead in the first period with goals by junior Becca Belliveau and sophomore Megan Ottoboni.
But the Warriors would fire back with goals of their own from Kelsey Mukai and Anna Kim. Husky senior Kaley Marden would find herself in early foul trouble giving advantage to the Warriors.
Every goal scored from both sides were difficult to contest; nothing cheap about the goals given up by Breana Meagher (Huskies) or Shelley Wenzel (Mission). In fact, it was a late-game, unbelievable save by senior Breana Meagher from point-blank range that energized the Huskies and brought the biggest cheers from the crowd.
Both sides played tough defense, however it was the Huskies that had only five turnovers; which would be all the Warriors would need to capitalize and take the advantage. The Huskies trailed by three in the final period but senior Kaley Marden pounded in a goal with a few minutes left to bring the game within reach, but too little too late as Mission went on to the victory.
