Listen up, metalheads. A heavy metal music festival is slated for Saturday and it promises to rock Hayward, attracting over a 1,000 people and nine bands from around the Bay Area.

Pete Schaaphok of Mystic Rage was inspired to start Bands4bands after experiencing the competitive, cutthroat world of the band scene. This loose organization of bands from various music genres provides a nurturing, supporting environment for both established and emerging bands trying to get some exposure.

Every year, Bands4bands, based in Oakland, puts on a live show in Hayward. The event, called "Metal Fest," features a host of metal bands including Potential Threat, Kaos, and Age of Aggression. "MetalFest is getting bigger and bigger every year and we're glad to be a part of it. Being able to give back to our community means a lot," said Jason of the band Kaos.

MetalFest was started three years ago when Bands4Bands saw a need for food assistance and took up the cause to raise awareness within the community. The Salvation Army was contacted and the rest is history. MetalFest is now an annual event bringing music to the community and canned food to those in need.

The upper knoll of Memorial Park will showcase vendors and local artists displaying their finest wares. Canned food donation bins are planned for the Bands4Bands booth and performing bands present merchandise for sale. Attendees also have an opportunity to score - for free (while supplies last) - a MetalFest compilation CD featuring all of the performing bands.

So pack your lunch and lawn chair for a killer day of metal. For families with children, there will be a play area on-site, open throughout the festival. Don't forget..."bring a metal can...and see a metal band," adds Schaaphok.

MetalFest features Concrete Coffin, Kaos, Potential Threat, Mystic Rage, In the Absence, Age of Aggression, Mudsoc, And All Was Lost, and MCP.

All canned food collected will be donated to Salvation Army. For more information please visit
