October 7, 2009 > Mocha's Fight
Submitted By Geoffrey Stanford
Most of us have a soft spot in our heart for cute little dogs. Mocha is a 4 1/2 year old Chihuahua puppy with a soft heart herself. Mocha is suffering from a serious heart condition called Patent Ductus Arteriosus. The disease has caused a blood vessel in Mocha's heart to not completely close, causing poor oxygenation to her body and causing her heart to fail at a very young age. Mocha also has a congenital hair lip which gives her a very special smile.
Without treatment, 2 out of 3 puppies will die before they turn 1. The problem is rooted in the fact that due to the Ductus in the heart, a lot of blood gets routed back through the pulmonary system instead of becoming oxygenated before flowing to the body. This causes the heart to pump more blood to keep up with the oxygen their body needs. This extra work being done by the heart causes premature failure. The good thing about PDA is that it IS curable.
Mocha can have her heart defect closed with a surgery at the Veterinary School at UC Davis. The cost of the surgery is $2500- 3000. Fremont Animal Hospital is starting a fund drive for Mocha and her family. We know that times are tough, but ANY help for Mocha's fight will be greatly appreciated.
