Ohlone sports recap
By Gary van den Heuvel
Ohlone College men's soccer team saw their winning streak come to an end, but not before they'd extended it to four games with a 3-1 road win over the Gavilan Rams in Gilroy on Tuesday (September 29).
A strong wind at Ohlone's backs helped the Renegade offense keep the pressure on, controlling the ball on the Rams' side of the field for most of the first 45 minutes. Ohlone capitalized with three, first-half goals, the first coming in the 14th minute, when forward Daniel Galloway scored after being the recipient of a fortunate bounce off a left-sided corner kick by George Mayer II; Ohlone's second goal came on a Mayer boot from the right corner which found Galloway's head and then the Gavilan net. It was Galloway's eighth goal of the season.
Two minutes later, in the 43rd minute of the half, the potent Mayer-Galloway combo connected again, but this time in reverse order. Renegades back Sean Randall launched a quick throw-in to Galloway at the left corner of the box. Galloway flicked the ball to Mayer, who clipped it over the on-coming Gavilan keeper into the right side of the net.
The second half found Ohlone facing the strong wind, but the Rams could only manage to score one goal.
The Renegades' winning streak came to an end on their home field, losing 3-0 to Evergreen. Ohlone was unable to score on seven, first-half shots on goal, being kept at bay by Evergreen's goalkeeper Jonathan Arellano. Evergreen broke the 0-0 halftime tie with three, second-half scores by Jose Ramirez, Alejandro Duarte and Leo Baltizar.
The loss was Ohlone's first in the Coast South Division. The Renegades are 2-1 in the Conference and 6-3 overall.
The Lady Renegades (1-1 in conference play) also suffered their first conference defeat of the season, dropping a 1-0 heartbreaker to Skyline on Tuesday, Sept. 29. A rough first few minutes cost Ohlone, as Trojans forward Isharene Malave was able to slip the ball past Ohlone keeper Shelby Tomesello in the first three minutes.
The loss was the first time in four years that Ohlone has lost a home game to Skyline.
Ohlone's women's volleyball team opened up their league play with an excruciatingly close home loss to Chabot on Friday evening (Oct. 2). Chabot won the match 3-0, but each game went down to the wire. Scores were 25-23, 25-23 and 26-24.
The Renegades' men's water polo team performed well at their own tournament, going 3-1 at the Ohlone College Tournament on the weekend of September 25 and 26. The Renegades opened with a 13-11 loss to Delta College, their third loss to Delta this season.
Ohlone's second Friday game was a forfeit win, due to a flu outbreak on the Solano team, which left them unable to field a squad. Ohlone came on strong in day two of the tourney, beating San Jose State 8-6 in a tight defensive battle. The Renegades beat Sierra 12-9. Scott Harvey was the offensive star of the game for Ohlone.
The women's team opened conference play with a 4-2 win over College of San Mateo at home on Friday (Oct. 2).
