Fremont Christian boys soccer went 1-2 this week playing against three Bay County League (BCL) East teams, Athenian (2-1 loss, Monday, Sept. 21); Valley Christian-Dublin (5-0 win, Wednesday, Sept. 23); and College Prep (2-1 loss, Friday, Sept. 25).
The Warriors started play Monday at Athenian in Concord. One hundred and four-degree temperatures on the artificial turf took its toll on both teams, leaving the game scoreless at halftime.
Fifteen minutes into the second half, Christian Brioso crossed the ball to junior midfielder Tim Heiniman. Athenian's defender accidentally knocked to ball backward and into his own net, giving the Warriors a 1-0 lead. The Owls scored twice after the own-goal, once on a penalty kick, to pull away from the visiting Warriors for a tough fought win.
Friday's action found the Warriors playing at home on Alumni field against BCL East powerhouse College Prep. The Cougars finesse offense was able to move the ball well in the first half, building a 2-0 lead at halftime.
The first goal was scored when the ball ricocheted off the crossbar and was put in by senior midfielder Brandon Smith. Smith again assisted in the Cougars second goal, crossing to forward Challen Herzberg-Brovold 18 minutes into the first half.
A fired up Warrior team took the field after halftime controlling the tempo of the game. Fullback Michael Mahabali moved up to midfield and helped lead a strong attack against College Prep. The Warriors were able to score on a Mahabali corner to senior forward Jeff Wilson, who headed the ball in for his seventh goal of the year. The last two minutes of the half were spent near or inside of the College Prep half, but a stout Cougar defense kept the ball out of the net, giving the Cougars the victory.
Sandwiched between the two losses, Fremont Christian was able to defeat rival Valley Christian-Dublin by a score of 5-0.
The Warriors scored in the first half when junior midfielder Eddy Domingo scored from inside the six. The Vikings and Warriors battled throughout the first half, but the score remained 1-0 at halftime.
An early blitz in the second half put Fremont Christian in the lead for good when they were able to score three goals in the first five minutes. Senior forwards Raudel Perez and Rudy Avila set each other up for two of the goals, and junior midfielder Wilson Kim fired a hard shot on a free kick to put the Warriors up, 4-0.
The final goal of the game came when senior forward Michael Husary passed to freshman midfielder Brandon Mahabali at the six for the score. The Warriors (6-3-1; 2-0-1) face league rival Contra Costa Christian next Tuesday, Sept. 29 (result not available for press).
