Aragon wins Irvington's girls volleyball tourney

On Saturday, Sept. 26, Irvington High of Fremont hosted a 12-team girls volleyball tournament which had three pools of four teams playing in the first round. Each match was a best two out of three format.

Local teams participating were American, Irvington and Kennedy of Fremont, and Hayward and Moreau Catholic of Hayward.

Pool 1
Irvington defeated Arroyo of San Lorenzo, 25-11 and 25-12. For Irvington, Katie Lopez had 8 kills and 3 digs; Morgan Aspelund, 7 kills and 5 aces; Anaszsa Thompson, 4 kills, 5 digs and 7 aces; and Danielle Carothers, 11 assists.

Irvington beat Hayward 25-7 and 25-18. Irvington's Lopez had 9 kills and 2 aces; Aspelund, 5 kills; Carothers, 2 aces and 10 assists; and Ali Fremont, 4 aces and 8 assists.

Irvington beat Alisal of Salinas 25-13 and 25-13. Leading Irvington were Lopez, 10 kills and 3 blocks; Aspelund, 6 kills and 3 digs; Carothers, 16 assists; and Ashley Hubacek, 6 kills and 3 digs.

Arroyo defeated Hayward 25-19 and 25-12 and Alisal beat Hayward 25-11 and 25-12.

Pool 2
Moreau Catholic defeated Gonzales 25-6 and 25-12; beat Kennedy 25-10 and 25-19; and won over Aragon 25-20, 4-25 and 18-16.

Gonzales beat Kennedy 25-11 and 25-10; and Aragon defeated Kennedy 25-11 and 25-6.

Pool 3
American beat Sequoia of Redwood City 26-24 and 25-21 and San Leandro 14-25, 25-19 and 15-13. American also lost to Livermore 25-22, 24-26 and 9-15.

In the second round there were three pools: Gold Division was the winners of Pools 1, 2 and 3, and best second place team; Silver Division had remaining second place teams and the two best third place teams; Bronze Division consisted of the worst third place team and all three fourth place teams.

Gold Division
Aragon beat Irvington 25-13 and 25-10. For Irvington, it was Lopez, 6 kills and 5 digs; Aspelund, 3 kills and 4 digs; Fremont 3 digs and 8 assists; and Carothers, 5 digs and 7 assists.

Moreau Catholic beat Livermore 25-17 and 25-23 and lost to Aragon 33-35 and 10-25 as Aragon took first in Gold.

Silver Division
American defeated Arroyo 25-14 and 25-18. American also beat Alisal (score unavailable) and took first in Silver.

Bronze Division
Kennedy beat Hayward 25-18 and 25-6 and lost to Sequoia 13-25 and 16-25. Sequoia took first in Bronze.
