Mission Gold wins Battle of the Bands
Submitted By John and Sharon Soulis
Fremont's based Mission Gold Jazz Band won the Battle of the Bands on September 13, presented by Dixieland Monterey, at the Hidden Valley Music Seminar in Carmel Valley.
Mission Gold took top honors at the Monterey Battle of the Bands when they completely nailed the powerful Lu Watters/South Frisco two cornet (West Coast revival) style of Jazz. They presented some very difficult tunes from the Oliver, Morton and Watters books flawlessly, without a hitch.
The band is filled out with top musicians from throughout the Bay area: Jack Weicks and Roz Temple from San Mateo, Andy Parker from Bay Point, Bob Sterling and John Soulis (leader) from Fremont.
This was the first real "public" performance for Valerie Johnson and Her King Bees, and the group did very well. They had a couple small hiccups initially, the fault of the sound system so it took a couple tunes to really get their footing. They came back strong in their second set.
Next the Classy Cats led by Marc Russo who served up 1940's and 50's style Jazz, very professionally, followed by the Black Tuesday Jazz Band from Sacramento. Come see this winning band perform at the 30th Annual, Jazz Bash by the Bay, March 5, 6 and 7, in Monterey.
