Mariners look to bounce back from winless season
By David J. Nicolas
Moreau Catholic High School of Hayward beat Richmond High School, 27-8, to start the football season on Saturday, Sept. 5, on the road.
"We did everything that we worked on in practice," said Head Coach Andrew Cotter. "The kids rallied together and did a great job."
The Mariners went 0-10 last season.
Cotter and the Mariners hoped to establish the run early. They jumped ahead in the first quarter and were up 20-0 by halftime.
Chris Allen rushed for 96 yards and had one touchdown. Joey Fiandor scored two touchdowns and rushed for 116 yards.
Moreau Catholic also showed some defensive prowess as it caused Richmond to turn over the ball four times on downs.
Although it took home a victory, Coach Cotter knows there is still a whole rest of the reason in front of his team.
"It feels good, but we have to go back to work. We can't sit back and be happy with this one win," Coach Cotter said.
The Mariners have a by-week and will play Galileo Academy of San Francisco on Friday, Sept. 18, at home.
