Red Devils runover Irvington in opener
By Jeff Weisinger
It's not the start that Irvington Head Coach Darrell Lutz wanted to kickoff the 2009 football season with as his Irvington Vikings dropped their season opener at the Mt. Diablo Red Devils, 22-0, last Friday, Sept. 4.
Junior Red Devils quarterback Ethan Morrow only threw for a mere 39 yards, however Mt. Diablo controlled the game on the ground, running over the Vikings defense for a total of 271 yards, including two carries by Morrow for 16 yards with a rushing touchdown. Junior Deon Turner rushed for a team high 115 yards on seven carries and fellow junior Devontae Anderson rushed twice for 60 yards with a touchdown.
The Red Devils defense was all over the Irvington quarterbacks on the night, recording four sacks against Irvington. Juniors Cory Faiva and Danny Mafileo both had two sacks each. Mt. Diablo also forced two Irvington fumbles, both of which the Red Devils recovered.
Irvington (0-1) will look to rebound from their 22-0 opening day loss when they take on Arroyo High in the Vikings home opener on Friday, Sept. 11. Arroyo, like Irvington, is entering the second week of the season after losing their opener, 42-6 to Del Campo last Saturday. |
