'Back here where we need ya'

By William Marshak

Lyrics of the 1976 hit "Welcome Back" were used as a theme song during the same time period for a popular television series featuring a young teacher returning to his high school alma mater. Roles had reversed for student-turned-teacher Gabe Kotter who now faced aspects of his adolescent self in the classroom. Another phrase in the song is a sharp reminder that for present students, "...those dreams have remained..." The tune and theme is still appropriate over three decades later.

On Wednesday, September 2, another eager group of students brimming with anticipation and their own dreams will enter classrooms to experience the joy, excitement and angst of school days. Greeting them to assist in achieving their aspirations, teachers and administrators also have high hopes for the coming school year.

Even through schools are faced with severe cutbacks and curriculum challenges educators are preparing for another year of reading, writing, 'rithmetic and much more. They, too, will dream of the possibilities. The first day of school is symbolic, an opportunity for a fresh start with old and new friends, teachers, administrators and staff recharged by summer months.

As school bells ring for the first class session, an offering of goodwill sets the tone for a healthy relationship between teachers and pupils. Fremont Flowers in partnership with Fremont Education Foundation (FEF) has been a part of this annual ritual for the past five years. Dirk Lorenz of Fremont Flowers says, "Our staff always looks forward to seeing the kids and how excited they are about the new school year."

Welcome Teacher Day, held this year on Tuesday, September 1st, invites all Fremont Unified School District elementary students to stop by for a free flower and bud vase to present to their teacher on the first day of school. Other businesses and organizations including Dale Hardware and the Centerville Business and Community Association have joined this effort which will include school supply giveaways. Weinerschnitzel will add to the fun by offering 59 cent ice cream cones during the event.
