HAAL Volleyball - Can Moreau Unseat O'Dowd?
By Gary van den Heuvel
If form holds, then Bishop O'Dowd High School should win another Hayward Area Athletic League (HAAL) girls volleyball title in the 2009 season. The mighty O'Dowd ran roughshod over the league last year, finishing 12-0 in the league. Despite the absence of six of last year's seniors, O'Dowd is returning a strong roster that includes 6-foot-2 junior Lindsey Parrott, who was the team leader in kills.
Hayward's best candidate to challenge O'Dowd is Moreau Catholic, who in 2008 finished 8-4 in the HAAL, 20-10 overall and made it to the NCS quarterfinals before being eliminated by - surprise, surprise - Bishop O'Dowd.
Head Coach Lindsey Mietz will oversee a Mariners squad which will be welcoming back last year's team leader in blocks (junior Katrina Torres), assists (senior Laura Burckhardt) and digs (senior Stefany Taylor), and last year's number two in kills, Rina Taufaasau.
While the outlook is bright at Moreau, prospects aren't quite as rosy at Hayward's three other high schools. Last year, the Tennyson Lancers, Mount Eden Monarchs and Hayward Farmers had a cumulative won-loss record of 3-35, with each school winning one game apiece. Tennyson brought up the rear by going winless in the HAAL.
They can take solace in the idea that after last year, things can only get better in '09.
