Senior Little Leaguers from Niles-Centerville go undefeated

By Biff Jones

Seniors (14-16 year olds) from Niles-Centerville Little League (NCLL) traveled to Ontario, Calif., last week to compete in the Senior LL Western Regional after having won the Nor Cal Championship.

Nine teams from the Western United States would play four games each, in two separate pools (Pool 1 had four teams and Pool 2, five). Top two teams after pool play would qualify for the Western Regional semifinals.

Game one for NC was on Tuesday, August 4, against Laurel, Montana, and Niles ended up putting a whipping on Laurel, 15-3. On Wednesday, NC played Sitka, Alaska, and came away with a little closer win, 7-0.

Thursday saw Niles take on a team from Portland, Oregon, composed of Lents/Mt. Hood/Montavilla LL. NC dominated the Portland team, 13-1, and took a 3-0 record into their final game of pool play.

On Friday, NC had a bye before taking on undefeated, Hilo American/National of Hawaii on Saturday, August 8. Winner would be the number one seed from Pool 1 going into the semifinals while the loser would be the number two seed.

This game turned out to be a "Donnybrook" with the boys from Niles finally coming out victorious in an 11-10 thriller.

NC next played Pool 2, number two seed on Monday, August 10, while the team from Hawaii played Pool 2, number one seed later that day. Two winners played on Tuesday, August 11, for the right to represent the Western Region at the Senior League World Series in Bangor, Maine, from August 16-22.

Results of the games on August 10-11 were not available at press time. Go to Web site, for the scores to see if NC advances to the Senior World Series.
