NC advances to the Western Regional
By Biff Jones
Niles-Centerville (NC) Seniors (14-16 year olds) of Fremont won the Little League Division 2 (Nor Cal) Tournament played last week in Stockton.
After winning game one, 2-1, against Sutter Buttes from Northern California, they fell to the losers' bracket in the double elimination tournament when they were defeated, 13-9, by Almaden of San Jose.
On Monday, July 27, NC continued through the loser's bracket with a 13-5 victory over Rocklin, and followed that on Tuesday with 7-6 win against Morada (near Stockton).
Losers' bracket action continued on Wednesday, July 29, as NC defeated a team from North Oakland, 7-4, to send NC into the championship game on Thursday, July 30, against undefeated Almaden.
With one loss, Niles would have to defeat Almaden twice to advance to the Western Regional. Thursday's game saw NC force the winner-take-all game on Friday, July 31, with a 4-0 win.
Winner-take-all game turned into a nail biter as it took 10 innings (seven is regulation) to decide a champion. NC prevailed, 4-3, and are headed to Ontario, California, for the Senior Western Regional.
Pitching stars for NC were Justin Dhanda, Billy Nevin and Jack Veronin. Marc Wik, the Tri-City Voice Male Athlete of the Month for August, is a member of the NC Senior Team.
First game for NC in the Western Regional was against a team from Montana and NC played it on Tuesday, August 4. Score was unavailable at press time. For results of all the Senior Western Regional games, go to the TCV Sports Web site, www.tricityvoice.com/sports.
