New Haven Schools, Board of Education briefs

Submitted By Rick La Plante

In keeping with the District's commitment to professional development and its focus on improving literacy, the Board of Education on Tuesday night approved contracts to further the implementation of Writer's Workshop, the District's research-based approach to teaching writing.

Services will include staff development and site-based coaching for third-, fourth- and fifth-grade teachers, summer institutes for kindergarten, first- and second-grade teachers and middle school teachers, a middle school fall institute, and additional coaching. Funding is through federal categorical money, enhanced by a grant from the East Bay Community Foundation.

As the District continues to sharpen its focus on literacy, the Board also approved contracts for staff development in literacy and for high school literacy support, as well as for coaching support for Elements of Balanced Literacy. Again, funding is through federal categorical money, and the District has been invited by the East Bay Community Foundation to apply for a second grant.

Also, the Board:
_Welcomed Abhi Brar, new assistant principal at James Logan High School. Mr. Brar taught special education and assisted with vice-principal duties at San Leandro High, where he worked with new Logan principal Amy McNamara.

_Approved a School Facility Needs Analysis providing for an increase in developer fees for new residential construction, from $2.97 per square foot to $3.26 per square foot.

_Approved a contract providing for Principal and Instructional Leadership Team training in August and October.

_Approved the annual Memorandum of Understanding with the Tiburcio Vasquez Health Center and the Alameda County Health Care Services Agency for services at James Logan and Conley-Caraballo high schools.

Agendas of regular Board of Education meetings and minutes of past meetings are available on the District website:
