Harry "Hank" Shephard Lewis

September 28, 1920 - July 24, 2009

A resident of Newark since 1954, Hank Lewis entered peacefully into rest at his residence in Newark, CA on July 24, 2009. Born in California on September 28, 1920 to Harry and Florence "Edna" Lewis, Hank was 88 years old.

He loved to build things with his hands and was active in the community as a member of the Jaycees, Kiwanis Society, Native Sons of the Golden West and a Mason. A longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church of Newark, Harry was also a valued member of the Newark Rotary and Newark Chamber of Commerce. He was elected to the Newark City Council for eight years in the late 60's and early 70's, Hank held the position of mayor twice.

A member of the Newark Unified School District Board, Hank was involved in the unification of the district. He also served on the first All Volunteer Newark Fire Department. A veteran of WWII in the US Army Air Corps, Hank held the rank of Staff Sergeant, flying in a B29; he received the Distinguished Flying Cross, one of the highest Army Air Corps honors.

Beloved husband to the late Carleen Lewis, Hank is survived by three children: daughter Sharon L. Yool of Newark, CA; son, Harry S. Lewis Jr. and wife Gail of Newark, CA. and son Alan D. Lewis and wife Kristina of Newark, CA. He is also survived by his brother William Lewis of Los Gatos, CA. and three grandchildren: Brooke E. Yool, David Lewis and April Cespedes, and five great-grandchildren.

Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service Thursday, August 6th at 1:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Newark, 35450 Newark Blvd., Newark. The family has requested remembrances in his honor be made to the American Cancer Society, East Bay Region, 1700 Webster St., Oakland, CA. 94612.
