Ohlone College accreditation warning lifted

Submitted By Sareeta Patel

Dr. Gari Browning, Ohlone College President, received notice last Wednesday from the ACCJC (Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges) that Ohlone has received unqualified reaffirmation of its accreditation for the remainder of the six-year accreditation period. The next accreditation visit will occur in 2014. Last July, the College was notified that it had been put "on warning." This delayed the College's reaffirmation until the Commission felt the College had corrected outstanding issues, including concerns about its Board of Trustees.

The Commission recommended that the board should clearly understand and act within the bounds of its role in establishing policy for the College and not in determining operational functions of the College. Over the ensuing months, the Board of Trustees participated in training and workshops, and developed documentation to clearly distinguish between the role of administration in managing the operations of the College and the role of the Board in determining policy allowing the two groups to interact and to function more effectively.

All College constituent groups and the trustees were supportive and cooperative in changes to the structure of board agendas and College staff participation in board meetings. The type of items brought before the board for action and the order of the meetings were changed to facilitate completing the business of Board meetings. Codification of the planning/budgeting cycle and staff evaluations was also submitted to fulfill all the recommendations by the Commission.

After reviewing reports from the College and visiting teams from the ACCJC, the accrediting commission removed the warning from Ohlone's accreditation status. The commission stated that they were impressed with the work the College had done and there were no further reports to be submitted until the regularly scheduled mid-term report in 2011 and the next comprehensive accreditation report in 2014.
