D59 wins Big League NorCal Tourney
By Biff Jones
After winning Section 5 in the Big League Division (16-18 year olds) of Little League Baseball, D59 (Milpitas/Southern San Jose Area) traveled to American River Community College in Sacramento to face five other section winners from Nor Cal.
On Friday, July 10, D59 defeated D45 (Union City/Hayward Area), 4-3, and followed that on Saturday, July 11, with a 35-5 thumping of a team from Chico.
Next day saw D45 put a hurt on a team from Stockton, 21-4, and then they defeated a Benicia team, 5-2, on Monday to continue on in loser's bracket action of the double-elimination tournament.
D59 also saw action on Monday, July 13, as they moved on in the winner's bracket by defeating host, Sacramento, 5-2. With the victory, D59 would have to lose twice to the same team to be eliminated.
Meanwhile, Sacramento defeated D45 on Tuesday, 5-3, to end D45's season and now would have to beat D59 twice.
Wednesday, July 15, Sacramento shut out D59, 4-0, to set up the winner-take-all game on Thursday, July 16. This time D59's bats came alive as they won the Division 2 (Nor Cal) Championship with a 12-1 throttling of the D5 team from Sacramento.
Next for D59 will be the Western Regional, running from Sunday, July 19, through Friday, July 24, at Bremerton, Wash., near Seattle.
There are two pools of round-robin play. Nor Cal is in Pool A along with Hawaii, Montana, Nevada and Washington. Pool B has Arizona, Oregon, Southern California and D2 host team, West Puget Sound, of Washington. First and second place teams after pool play meet in the semifinals with the two winners playing for the West Regional Championship and a trip to Easley, S.C., July 29-August 5, in the Big League World Series.
