Restaurant Review: Wok City Diner

By J.D. Wolfe

How many times have you put your glasses in your hand or on the top of your head and wondered aloud where your glasses were? The answer is of course, they were right in front of you. That is how I think about Wok City Diner. This is a real gem of a place but often we take for granted the really nice places right under our noses. So, on my new trek, I boldly ventured where many have been before me.

Wok City Diner, located in a shopping center on South Mission Boulevard between Warm Springs Boulevard and Highway 680, is very easy to find and parking is the best with spaces right at the front door.

At the front door you are warmly greeted by the hostess who also is the cashier and the person who organizes takeout orders. She is busy! By the way, everything is available for takeout; just call ahead. For first time visitors I highly recommend picking up a takeout menu to keep at home.

The kitchen is well-maintained and clean and so are the restrooms. Seating is very comfortable in the sparkling dining room with booths, tables for four, and round tables featuring a "Lazy Susan" for larger parties.

My review of the food can be summed up with one word... Wow! Wok City Diner has a varied menu ranging from great appetizers to wonderful soups to many traditional dishes, such as chow mein, sweet and sour pork, etc. So what is it that takes a Chinese restaurant to another level?

It's the chef, of course! The chef at Wok City Diner is well-trained and one of the best. Bing, who is the owner, understands how to run a restaurant. He knows the best ingredient for success is to find the right person to prepare food. In the end, this is a major reason for the success of any restaurant. What makes Wok City Diner different is not just what is on the menu but is what is NOT on the menu! For example, I love Egg Foo Yung and this about the best I have found anywhere. But you have to ask for it - it is not on the menu.

I begin virtually every Chinese meal with my beloved pot stickers and at Wok City Diner they are exceptionally well-prepared. Spread a little hot oil on them and they quickly disappear - as if by magic. Poof! Everyone around you will know why you are smiling. They are delicious!

Soon the Wor Wonton Soup arrives and along with it, a question of how you are going to eat so much soup. With each mouthful of fresh cooked vegetables and broth comes the realization that indeed you will finish it. A feeling of confidence and a bit of euphoria descends as you feel confident that you can eat all that you ordered. Ha!

The rest of your meal arrives and the assault on your olfactory nerves is almost more than you can handle. The aromas of Chow Mein, Egg Foo Yung (and sauce), Mu Shu Pork (and sauce), Snow Peas and Water Chestnuts, and the other dishes ordered send your brain into overload. On autopilot, you savor the food brought to your table by a caring team of servers. You are ready to enjoy a delicious feast and Wok City Diner delivers!

Thousands of words might be used to describe the excellent food but a visit to Wok City Diner is the only explanation necessary. Remember to bring your appetite! Best of all, prices are very reasonable. It's all good, so enjoy!
