D45 Big Leaguers advance to Nor Cal Championship

By Biff Jones

Mission San Jose Little League of Fremont hosted the Big League Section 3 double-elimination tournament from June 27-July 2. Districts represented were D14 (Fremont/Newark), D45 (Hayward/Union City Area), D52 (Redwood City Area) and D57 (San Ramon Area).

On Saturday, June 27, D57 defeated D14, 11-3, and D45 won 5-1 over D52. Sunday, June 28, saw D14 beat D52, 7-3, in loser's bracket action to send D52 home for the 2009 season.

In winner's bracket play on June 29, D45 and D57 hooked-up. D57 started strong with a run in the top of the first inning and retired six of the first seven D45 batters, to take a 1-0 lead after two innings.

D45's bats finally woke-up as they tallied two runs in their half of the third inning and added one more in the fourth to go ahead, 3-1. That was all the scoring of the game as Jenson settled down and gave up only one hit over the last four innings for the complete-game victory.

Loser's bracket play continued on Tuesday, June 30 , with D57 and D14 fighting to stay alive. This game turned out to be a slugfest as D14 scored single runs in the first and second innings while D57 scored one run each in the second and third.

D57 would break the game open with five runs in their half of the fourth, three in the fifth and a single run in the sixth. D14 answered with two in the fifth and four in the sixth before going quietly in the top of the seventh to end their season and give D57 an 11-8 victory.

Leading D14 at the dish were first baseman, Sean Pope, with a single, a walk and a two-run home run, second baseman, Spenser Peterson, a double and a single and catcher, Daniel Miller, two singles and a walk.

Section 3 Big League action resumed on Thursday, July 2, with unbeaten, D45, facing once beaten, D57.

D57 opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first. Pitching would dominate the next three innings with goose eggs being put up by both teams. Hitters would take over in the fifth as D45 scored four in the top of the fifth, one in the sixth and three more in the seventh.

D57 chased D45 starting pitcher Gage Gottermeyer as they put together two doubles and a single for two runs to lead off the bottom of the fifth. Orlan Ellis came in relief and shut D57 down the rest of the way to give D45 an 8-3 victory and the Sectional Championship.

Leading D45 at the plate were centerfielder Ryan Tom with three singles; first baseman T.J. Ner, two doubles; third baseman Nick Montoya, double and a single; right fielder McLain, double and a walk; left fielder Jenson, two singles; and designated hitter, Matt McAusland, two singles.

D45 represents little leagues, Castro Valley American and National, Mt. Eden (Hayward), San Leandro and Union City National.

D45 joins five other Northern California Section winners in the Division 2 Tournament (Nor Cal), July 10-15 (or 16 if necessary), at American River Community College in Sacramento. Nor Cal winner goes to the Western Regional Championship in Bremerton, Wash., July 19-24. West Region Champion then advances to the Big League World Series in Easley, S.C., July 29-August 5, with the championship game to be televised on the ESPN family of networks in primetime on August 5.
