Members of the Fremont Sunrise Rotary Club recently completed its community enrichment project by donating fifty American Heritage Student Dictionaries to several elementary schools (Azevada, Blacow, Brier, Durham, Mattos, Millard and Niles) in Fremont. The dictionaries were for the school libraries, offices and third grade classrooms.
Three years ago while delivering dictionaries to third grade students, a teacher pointed out that the classroom dictionary was published in 1965. Lee Stilwell, President of Sunrise Rotary, never forgot that moment. So during his year as president, promoted the idea of donating classroom dictionaries.
Lee applied for and received a Rotary District 5170 Club Opportunity Grant. Sunrise had to match or exceed the money allotted to the club. Using money from fundraising activities to exceed the District Grant, the project was set in gear. Rotarians delivered the books to the schools and the teachers on June 12, 2009.
Rotarians plan and carry out a remarkable variety of humanitarian, educational and cultural programs that touch people's lives in their local communities and our world community.
Fremont Sunrise Rotary meets every Wednesday at 7:15 a.m. at the Original Pancake House in Fremont. Please join us for breakfast to find out what Rotary is all about.
