MSJLL Diamondbacks rattle Phillies for TOC win
Submitted By MSJLL Parents
Mission San Jose Little League's Diamondbacks cruised to a 7-3 win over the Newark National Phillies in District 14 Minor Invitational action Saturday.
It was an impressive win for the Diamondbacks, who entered the game with a 15-5 record. The D'backs put together the total package, pitching, fielding and hitting well against the 19-1 Phillies in an opening-round game played on Centerville National's field at Patterson Elementary in Fremont.
Power pitcher Kevin Zhangxu gave the D'backs a great start, freezing batter after batter on called third strikes. Justin Lu and Brett Hansen provided steady middle relief, and Justin McFarland entered the bottom of the sixth with one out and coolly recorded the final two outs.
Hansen pounded out a pair of doubles and a single to drive the offense. Chelita Villegas-Voreck came through with timely hits, as did McFarland and Zhangxu. Hansen fired two superb throws from shortstop to nail runners at first, and Jonah Baldwin made a terrific catch on a fly ball.
The Diamondbacks, managed by Matt Hansen, were set to play Newark American in the semifinals at Mattos Elementary on Monday evening, June 22. Results not available at press.
Other MSJLL TOC representatives were scheduled to open action this week. |
