New book of lists all about Bay Area sports - an entertaining way to kill time
By Richard Medugno
Top ten lists are light reading and a great way to kill a couple of minutes whenever you're stuck somewhere. If you're a local sports fan, there's a new book out that will help distract you while waiting to get your haircut, car fixed or see your dentist.
The paperback is titled "The Great Book of San Francisco Bay Area Sports Lists." It is by KNBR 680 AM sports radio host Damon Bruce, and features over 100 lists on 235 pages. Even though I'm a transplant from San Diego and continue to root for my home town teams, I found many of the lists and much of the trivia this book contains both interesting and entertaining.
Here are a few of my favorites:
* In the "Ten Most Important High School Athletes from San Francisco" the top two were both Galileo High School alumni: Joe DiMaggio and O.J. Simpson. Hard to believe "Mr. Coffee" and "the Juice" went to the same school, isn't it?
* Number One in the "Worst Trades in Bay Area Sports History" was the Raiders move to getting Randy Moss. Read the entire description of why Moss merits the top slot for worst and I guarantee you'll laugh your head off when you finish it, even if you're a Raiders fan, and, especially, if you're a Raiders hater.
* "Ten Bay Area Football Memories" by Fremont native Gary Plummer where in addition listing his experiences winning a Super Bowl with the 49ers and playing for the San Diego Chargers, he wrote about playing for the Mission San Jose High School and Ohlone College football teams.
While I enjoyed reading many of the lists stuffed into this paperback, I wouldn't necessarily agree with the author and publisher that this is a "great book." How can a book stuffed with just lists be really great? It can't be and it isn't.
While you can't be too critical of a lightweight, pastime book like this, I did find a number of typos and errors. For example, this mistake: Bruce wrote that catcher A.J. Pierzynski joined the Giants in 1993, when in fact it was 2004.
Also, this book of sports lists contained some obvious filler. For example: "Ten Best Movies Shot in San Francisco" and "Worst Pieces of Crap Filmed in San Francisco" stuck in around page 100 between "Ten Most Extreme Outdoor Destinations" and "Greatest Hairdos in Bay Area Sports History."
