Fire Truck Day comes to Ardenwood
By Suzanne Ortt
Fun! Water! Water! Fun! This describes Fire Truck Day at Ardenwood Historic Farm, an exhilarating family day. Meet local firefighters, some of America's finest, and shake hands with Smokey the Bear. Explore the world of firefighters through an awesome array of activities.
Check out fire trucks, both new and old used by Tri-City fire stations. Local historical societies and fire truck enthusiasts also bring historic engines to display. A highlight of this year's Fire Truck Day is the first-time showing of "Leapin' Lena," a 1932 GMC fire truck, owned by the Milpitas Historical Society.
Firefighters from Fremont, Newark, Union City and East Bay Regional Parks will participate in the Battle of the Fire Trucks at noon. Children team up and help man fire hoses aimed at the opposition. Be ready to get wet!
In the Kids' Craft and Play Area, children can make Dalmatian and fun fire truck puppets. Bonus activities are firehouse and fire engine play huts, a fire truck action table, and a fire truck story reading corner.
Prepare to move to the science-themed rock and roll by the Bungee Jumpin' Cows. Happening at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., this band will have the entire family dancing.
If all this action makes you hungry, the Farmyard Cafˇ has barbeque lunches and snacks for sale.
Ardenwood, still a working farm, provides numerous regular events. See exhibits of vintage farm equipment. Spot the animals: goats, cows, turkeys, rabbits and more. Take a ride on the horse-drawn train. Visit the blacksmith's forge. Walk through the Victorian vegetable garden, little changed since the early 1900s. A look at the Patterson House, now expanded from George Washington Patterson's bachelor days, is rewarding. Patterson, who came West seeking gold in 1849, discovered another type of gold, the fertile farm fields of Southern Alameda County.
Sara Fetterly, event coordinator, and the Ardenwood staff have a fantastic and active day planned. Come join in and celebrate the old and the new.
