Ohlone sets all-time win mark; Chabot bats come alive

By Giovanni Albanese Jr.

In the final week of the regular season in Coast Conference baseball play, Ohlone and Chabot were playing to reach two different goals. Ohlone took to the field looking to accomplish two things: win the Coast Conference outright for the first time in 18 years and set a team-high in wins for a season with 35. Meanwhile, Chabot was just looking to clinch a spot in the regional tournament come this weekend.

Ohlone started its week on the road versus West Valley on Tuesday, April 28. Things did not go in favor of the Renegades on this day, as West Valley shut down the Ohlone bats, en route to a four-run win, 6-2.

In Ohlone's final regular season game, they hosted Skyline on Thursday, April 30. Initially, the bats continued to struggle. Sean Martin, who was coming off his first loss of the season, pitched four and a third strong innings, giving up just one run.

Training, 1-0, going into the bottom half of the seventh, the Renegades bats woke up, scoring all four of their runs in the frame.

Cody Foster tied the game with an RBI single, scoring Steven Ramos - who had just tripled - from third. And after Zack Johnson walked, Jeff Johnson knocked one out of the ballpark to make it 4-1 Ohlone.

Ian Hoff pitched four and two-thirds innings of relief for Martin to get the win for the Renegades, who got their 35 win of the season, with only nine down. Hoff allowed no runs on two hits, while striking out four in the winning cause.

Ohlone, after winning the Coast Conference outright to go along with the team record for wins in a season, will now host a first-round regional tournament series over the weekend of May 8-10. Their opponent will be determined on May 3.

Meanwhile, Chabot was just looking to win and get some help in the final week of the regular season to propel them into the regional tournament.

Chabot came out swinging a hot stick in both their games, totaling 33 runs over two games, while the pitching allowed just nine.

In its first contest of the week, the Gladiators traveled to San Francisco to take on City College. The Gladiators put no doubt in this result, jumping out early and often, en route to a 17-5 throttling.

On Thursday, April 30, the Gladiators took the field for their last regular season game on the road at Mission College. Mission, who has struggled all year in the Coast Conference, continued to do so against the Gladiators. Chabot won in another 12-run rout, this time by a 16-4 clip.

With the two wins, Chabot squeaked into the post season as the #16 seed and were host to a one-game elimination game against #17 Shasta on Tuesday, May 5, with the winner advancing to the Regional Tournament this weekend (May 8-9). Meanwhile, Ohlone received the top seed in the NorCal Regional and will host the lowest seed remaining from the two single-elimination games (#18 Marin @ #15 San Jose being the other) in a best two out of three series, beginning Friday, May 8.
