The unvarnished truth

Fremont Opera Artistic Director David Sloss tells all! Speaker Sloss will lead his audience on a fascinating tour through the long and immensely varied history of Sex in Opera. Three centuries of operatic intimacy will be revealed and explained with three of Fremont Opera's great singers providing illustrative examples... of the music only.

This program will be presented only once in which eighteen different varieties of operatic intimacy will be explored. Performers will include soprano Aimˇe Puentes, whose many roles have included Zerlina in "Don Giovanni," Musetta in "La Boh¸me," and Susanna in "The Marriage of Figaro." Returning to Fremont Opera is baritone Eugene Brancoveanu, who starred as Figaro in Fremont Opera's "Barber of Seville," and has appeared in many roles at San Francisco Opera. He was in the original cast of Baz Luhrmann's "La Boh¸me" on Broadway, and received a 2004 LA Stage Alliance Ovation Award for his work in the Luhrmann production in Los Angeles.

Making his first Fremont Opera appearance will be tenor Mathew Edwardsen. Mr. Edwardsen's many roles include Don Josˇ in "Carmen," the Duke in "Rigoletto," Romˇo in Gounod's "Romˇo et Juliette, "Nemorino in "L'elisir d'amore," and Rodolfo in "La Boh¸me." This season he will be seen as Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly at West Bay Opera, before heading north for Opera Fairbanks' "Tosca" with Met artist Cynthia Lawrence.

David Sloss, Fremont Opera's conductor, Artistic Director and founder, has also been Music Director and Conductor of the Fremont Symphony since 1980. During his long association with West Bay Opera, beginning in 1981, he conducted over twenty productions for the Palo Alto Company.
