Ohlone College Artists Show it off in Art Competition
Submitted By Pirouz Mehmandoost
Ohlone College's Louie-Meager Art Gallery opens its doors to the annual Student Fine Art and Design Show and competition on Monday, April 27. There will be an awards ceremony for the student show at the Fremont campus in room 3201 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. The event is open to the public. Doors to the gallery will be open form 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Awards will be given to ten different categories, from painting to interior design.
Students were allowed to enter artwork completed in classes during this school year. Some, like sophomore Bryant Sina, see this as an opportunity to review their artistic development over time. "I look back at the person I was just a year ago, and I don't see the same artist," says Sina. "It's important for a student to put themselves in a place where they will be subject to criticism. You always learn something, even if you don't like what you hear." Sina, who will transfer to the California College of the Arts in the fall, won first prize in the painting category in 2008. "You've got to participate in these events as soon as you can, they build character. It's an experience in social relations, if anything else."
Show judge, Denise Owen, sees the student show as a way not only to review the work of her students, but as a source for her own inspiration. "Analyzing student work is stimulating," says Owen. The professor of drawing and interior design spends much of her time with students, and considers the show a reciprocation of knowledge from students back to professors. "The show is a review professors' curriculum."
The gallery, whose mission is to exhibit the work of arts educators, serves as a place where students may interact with professors outside of the classroom environment. Students are given the opportunity to speak with artists, who are a common sight during receptions. The Louie-Meager gallery has undergone major developments in the past year, from the employment of new docents to the installation of a Walker hanging system. Gallery director Kenney Mencher has introduced new generations of students to the gallery, in hopes that they develop both as artists and as students. "This year is marks a turning point for the gallery and its docents," says Mencher, who has directed the Louie-Meager Gallery for two years.
The Louie-Meager Gallery is open to the public from 11:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday. The Student Art and Design Show ends on Monday, May 11.
