Irvington dominates MVAL golf tourney first round
By Gary van den Heuvel
A sterling round of golf by Irvington High School's Mac McClung led Irvington to a victory in the first round of the Mission Valley Athletic League (MVAL) golf tournament, played at Sunol Palm Course on Tuesday, April 7.
McClung, who was last year's individual MVAL champion, shot a one-under-par 71, seven strokes ahead of his nearest competitor, and the only golfer to record a score under par.
Irvington's golf team went undefeated with a 5-0 regular season record, and will clinch a spot in the TOC tournament as long as they finish at least third place in round 2 of the MVAL tourney, to be played on Monday, April 20. The TOC event will be held on Monday, May 11, at Meadow Club in Fairfax.
"What we have is team camaraderie like I've never seen before," said Irvington Coach Rick Mangan, "everyone pulling for each other and urging each other to practice just to make the team better."
Jonathan Lin shot 82, Jane Dong shot an 85 and Kurtis Park had a round of 86 for the Vikings. Cumulatively, Irvington shot 413. Mission San Jose was second with 416, followed by Washington (421), Newark Memorial (460), American (506) and Kennedy (537). |
