CSD sweeps doubleheader against Pescadero
Submitted By David Cease
California School for the Deaf (CSD) and Pescadero played two on Monday, April 6, at Pescadero High, and the Eagles of CSD were able to come away with a sweep: 6-5 in game one; 8-0 in the nightcap.
Game 1: Eagles down early, come back late
Game one of the doubleheader was scheduled for five innings. But with the game tied, 5-5, it had to go into extra innings.
The Vikings of Pescadero had the Eagles down for most of the game. In the top of the fifth, the Vikings were leading 5-2. But the Eagles would not lie down in defeat.
Ronnie Cuartero was the first batter of the inning and hit a shot to the second baseman, to tough for him to handle, and caused an error. Shane Nevins walked to the plate and hit a double. With the tying run at the plate, the Vikings changed pitchers. Steven Gosselin promptly hits a home run to left, tying the game, 5-5.
Defensively, Brandon Dean pitched four strong innings while striking out four and giving up five runs.
With the game tied, CSD put Zac Kohler on the mound. Kohler shut down the Vikings, only allowing one hit and striking out six.
CSD was able to score a run in the top of the seventh, taking a 6-5 lead. Kohler shut down the Vikings in the bottom half, leading the Eagles to victory.
Game 2: Eagles pound Vikings to sweep double-dip
CSD gets 11 hits in four innings to secure the 8-0 victory in game two against the Vikings.
Shane Nevins went 3-3 with two doubles to lead the offense. Steven Gosselin knocked in three to help out Nevins' cause on offense. Brandon Dean and Richie Dunn had two RBIs of their own.
Zac Kohler threw a three-hitter and struck out nine for his sixth win of the season. CSD improved to 9-3 on the year with the two wins, 4-1 in the Bay Counties League.
CSD next takes the field on Tuesday, April 21, at home against Oakland Military Institute, after taking a break in the action for two weeks. |
