Softball season starts at Milpitas
By Idorenyin Uto-Uko
Softball season is in full swing at Milpitas High School. The Trojans have made the post season 10 consecutive years and Coach Dan Atwell is focused on continuing with his team's commitment towards success.
"I'm excited about this year's team because they're older, so to speak," said Atwell, "and in terms of depth, were very strong."
Atwell's Trojan team boasts 10 seniors. Some key senior players include: Pitcher, Melissa Guerra; pitcher, Cherlyn Trujillo; third baseman, Vanessa Leija; and shortstop, Jennifer Macaulay.
The team began last week off with a tough 5-0 start. "We haven't found our hitting yet, but hopefully we can come alive this week," Atwell said.
Despite Atwell's hope his team did not do well at the end of the week, as they participated in the Charlie Miguel Tournament over the weekend. In three games during the tournament, the Lady Trojans went 0-2-1.
In game one, on Friday, March 20, Milpitas lost to Notre Dame Salinas, 15-1; On Saturday, March 21, Milpitas tied Live Oak, 2-2, in their first game, while losing, 7-2, to Hillsdale.
Even though the Milpitas Trojans softball team has had a soft start, Atwell remains optimistic that his team will do well in when this year's post season begins in May.
"When it counts, we'll be in the hunt," said Atwell, adding Milpitas will "be able to play with the big dogs and make it to CCS."
