LIFE ElderCare receives $10,000 grant
LIFE ElderCare was awarded a $10,000 grant from Meals On Wheels Association of America and Wal-Mart Foundation to provide hot, nourishing meals to frail, homebound Tri-City seniors.
Many Meals On Wheels programs were forced to change or reduce services in the past year because of rising food costs and the downturn of the economy. Seniors have been especially hard hit, and 65 percent of Meals on Wheels recipients in the Tri-City area are unable to contribute to the cost of their meals. The grant will alleviate some of these burdens for LIFE ElderCare and enable them to continue nutrition services to better serve seniors in Fremont, Newark and Union City.
"We will be able to feed more of our senior clients in need and make a tremendous impact in our community," said Executive Director Mary M. Anderson. "The cost of a senior meal for one year is about the same as the cost of just one month in a long-term care facility. During the past year, LIFE ElderCare provided 1,700 additional meals beyond contract expectations and we expect this number to grow dramatically as economic conditions worsen."
The fact that 11.4 percent of seniors in America are at risk of hunger and the population is aging at an unprecedented rate put a significant strain on community-based Meals On Wheels' ability to provide for those in need.
