Go Milpitas

By Meenu Gupta

A portal web site for Milpitas residents, Go Milpitas serves articles, local news, monthly calendar of events and much more. First registered on March 31, 1999, the website has come a long way with a traffic ranking of 64,752 visits.

The 12-year-old journey started much before that in 1996. "About that time, I and some others were trying to get the city government to create a city website, but when they finally decided to do so, it was only going to have city government business. We wanted a community site that also included the schools, library, and all the various non-profits and businesses in this town too. The Chamber was only going to include its members, which includes businesses outside the city" said Ann Zeise, who manages the website. "Back then it wasn't as easy to find a server as it is nowadays, so we all went searching."

She happened to be the first to find a free server - on the original About.com which was then called The MiningCo.com. "As I was the first to find a free server, I got to be the manager and owner of the URL," said Zeise, who grew up in the Bay Area, and moved to Milpitas in 1984.

As interesting as its history is, so is the exhaustive content of the website. Movies, events, recipes, arts and entertainment, the independent site offers information on all aspects of the Milpitas Community including a daily calendar of local events and a listing of interesting places to go with children. "The shopping centers, weight loss section, McCarthy Ranch, movie section which I update every week are more popular," Zeise said.

The website will soon feature a multi-user blog with sections on current news, entertainment, with a spam guard to scrutinize the posted material. "People can voice their opinion, they will be able to add content after making a login on the website for free," said Zeise.

The site has grown over the decade and now gets around a quarter of a million page views, mostly from residents and people who work or visit here.
Other websites Zeise manages are www.milpitashistoricalsociety.org, and homeschooling.gomilpitas.com.
