Tennis takes off at Ohlone
By Idorenyin Uto-Uko
Men's tennis is back in the swing of things at Ohlone College. After nearly a 20-year hiatus as a sport at Ohlone, Coach Cliff Awuy has his team headed for promise and prosperity.
The Renegades have two conference wins, and an overall record of 2-1 thus far. They defeated Cabrillo 6-3 in the season opener and followed that with a 7-2 victory over Mission on Friday, March 6.
"We expect to be in the top three in the conference," Awuy said.
The Renegades only loss of the season was a 5-4 narrow defeat to De Anza in late February. Despite the defeat to De Anza, the upstart Ohlone coach believes his team can beat traditional powerhouse Foothill.
"If we play our best, and to the level we are capable of playing, we can beat Foothill," asserts Awuy.
Ohlone was originally supposed to play Foothil on March 3, but the game was cancelled due to rain and has yet to be rescheduled.
Top players for the net-savvy Renegades this season are Thomas Magee, David Verbefor, Luis Castrulta and Andre Cimpeoaie. The Renegades took on Chabot at home on Tuesday March 10 (results not in time for press) and will next take the court on Friday, March 20, at Cabrillo. |
